Buluk andanit kokonas — cattle under coconut

Livestock has been part of Saraoutou since day one: in 1962 the station's first research included improving livestock grazing under coconut.[1]

In April 1967 R. Manciot started a Charolais absorption-crossbreeding programme with one Charolais bull and 37 local, mainly Hereford, heifers. A 15-year review found that Charolais crosses raised the productivity of the coconut grove by about 15%.[2]

Today the section conserves Charolais and Limousin herds, runs artificial insemination at VARTC and on private farms, and studies Panicum C1 pasture in the open and under coconut.[3]

From May 2016 to October 2018 the ACIAR beef project LPS/2014/037 tested 17 grasses and 14 legumes at VARTC, including legumes under 10-year-old coconuts, alongside a grazing trial.[4]

Improved Charolais and Brahman cattle were released with the first Strategic Plan in 2023.[5]

What we conserve

  • Charolais and Limousin cattle genetic resources[3]

What we breed & study

  • Genetic improvement by artificial insemination at VARTC and private farms[3]
  • Grazing systems under coconut: pasture production, nutritional value and cattle performance[3]
  • New grass and legume species (ACIAR "Bisnis Blong Buluk")[3]

What you can get

  • Breeding bulls (natural service and AI), heifers, steers, bulls and cows[3]
  • Panicum C1 seeds and clumps[3]
  • Technical assistance on cattle management and facilities; training on request[3]
