Cocoa & Coffee

Santo beans, bred for taste and size

In 1982 a coffee and cocoa research unit was created at Valeteruru under the French institute IRCC, and it joined the coconut station when both institutes merged into CIRAD.[1]

CIRAD cocoa breeders tested hybrid performance and resistance to brown pod rot at Valeteruru.[2]

Today the programme manages a collection of 86 cocoa clones covering the main cacao types: Criollo, Trinitario, Forastero and Amelonado. Researchers hand-pollinate, graft young and old trees, and select improved cocoa for taste and bean size.[3]

The station also grows, roasts and sells its own Santo coffee.[4]

What we conserve

  • A collection of 86 cocoa clones (2016)[3]

What we breed & study

  • Comparative trials of hybrids created on station[3]
  • Selection of improved cocoa for taste and bean size; manual pollination; grafting[3]
  • Trials on cocoa shade density[3]

What you can get

  • Cocoa seedlings in polybags and pods (hybrids and Amelonado)[3]
  • Grafted coffee material[4]
  • Roasted and ground coffee: Tradition (60% Arabica, 40% Robusta), Corsé (30% Arabica, 70% Robusta) and Pur Arabica — 2016 list[4]

Achievements

Key results

8,000 hybrid pods (320,000 seeds) produced on station each year (2016)[3]
Technical assistance to ACIAR and SPC projects[3]
